OSAKO IS YOUR STUDENT UNION
The Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OSAKO) is a non-political service and support organisation for all students in Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oulu UAS). Its status is prescribed by law. The union has currently about 3 500 members who study full-time in Oulu UAS.
OSAKO offers a remarkable amount of local, regional and national benefits to its members. It speaks up for students´ social and financial rights and represents students in matters of education, studies and student´s status. Our student union also co-ordinates and develops tutor activities at Oulu UAS.
OSAKO works in close co-operation with the administration of Oulu UAS and develops education together with the Study Affairs office and educational units. The union nominates representatives to the board of Oulu UAS, Board of Study Grants and other working groups.
The highest decision-making power in OSAKO lies in the hands of the body of 25 representatives. The members of the body are chosen by the students each year. Executive board uses the executive power and runs the operations of the student union. The chair person and the six board members are chosen by the body of representatives. OSAKO has also few full-time and part-time employees.
OSAKO is a member of SAMOK (Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences). In SAMOK our local student union has influence on national matters and the members of the executive board have access to the seminars provided by SAMOK. SAMOK is also our mouthpiece to the state administration and national organisations.
Sectors and working groups
Operations and activities of OSAKO have been divided into different sectors: organisational affairs, educational affairs, social affairs, international and cultural affairs and tutorial affairs. The chair person of each sector´s working group is always a member of the executive board. Otherwise the working groups mainly consist of the representatives of the field-specific student associations of every educational unit.

Students of every educational unit in Oulu UAS have their own student associations which co-operate with the Student Union OSAKO. Membership in these field-specific student associations is FREE of charge once you´ve joined OSAKO.

To join OSAKO, you must order a student card:
- Provide a digital photo of yourself (e.g. a passport photo). Without the photo the ordering application is ineligible. Use only .jpg-formed picture, minimum size is 201x295 pixels.
- Go to http://www.osakoweb.fi/join . To sign in you need your student number (ASIO-number). Follow the instructions carefully!
- Pay the membership fee (25 € for the academic year, 15 for the Autumn or Spring semester) as the application tells. NB! Pay also the fee 5 € for the card.
- After paying the membership fee, you can pick up your academic year/semester sticker from a membership service point. New members can pick up their student cards in approximately two weeks after the ordering.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Culture team and International team
One way to get involved in activities is to take part in different teams organized by OSAKO.
Culture team plans and arranges events for students, from parties to art exhibitions and so on. International students are welcome to join the team in order to arrange happenings that are truly interensting. All ideas are needed!
International team gets together to discuss joys and sorrows of international students of Oulu UAS. Students can discuss on topics that affect their studies, every-day life and so on. Via members of OSAKO messages discussed in the team may be forwarded to the administration of the school.
