Student Union OSAKO
The Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OSAKO) is a non-political service and support organisation for all students in Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oulu UAS). Its status is prescribed by law.
OSAKo is one of the biggest student unions of universities of applied sciences in Finland. The union has currently about 3 800 members who study full-time in Oulu UAS. The predecessor of OSAKO was formed in 1997, in other words the student union is now 14 years old.
Each member of OSAKO will get either blue or green student card. By paying membership fee every year student will get a sticker to his / her student card, and this sticker indicates that the card is valid. OSAKO is a member of Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences - SAMOK which supervises the interests of the students on a national level.
Sectors and working groups
Operations and activities of OSAKO have been divided into different sectors: organisational affairs, educational affairs, social affairs, international and cultural affairs and tutorial affairs. The chair person of each sector´s working group is always a member of the executive board. Otherwise the working groups mainly consist of the representatives of the field-specific student associations of every educational unit.
Who
The highest decision-making power in OSAKO lies in the hands of the body of 25 representatives. The members of the body are chosen by the students each year. Executive board uses the executive power and runs the operations of the student union. The chair person and the six board members are chosen by the body of representatives. OSAKO has also few full-time and part-time employees.
